Punta Della Mola : A Sicilian Inlet Full Of Magic

In search of beautiful sunsets and places to snorkel, I found a place where a beautiful cliff is kissed by the blue sea. This place is located on the Maddalena Peninsula of Siracusa. It is a marine protected area consisting of a natural inlet, with two small beaches, and a wonderful view of the island of Ortigia.

ABOUT PUNTA DELLA MOLA

An important page in the history of the city of Siracusa was written in this place. From this inlet, in 415 BC. the Athenians for the first time attacked Syracuse to conquer it. In the countryside in front of the beaches, even today, there are the remains of the tombs of Syracusan soldiers who were killed during that battle.

Also here are barracks and bunkers dating back to the Second World War. Recently the place has made a comeback in the chronicles of the city, because the citizens have fought to have it declared a Nature Reserve.

Punta Della Mola is one of the perfect places in Syracuse for photography lovers, with its breathtaking sunsets. Here you can, of course, spend a day at the beach, reaching the coves with ease by swimming. There is also an interesting legend, linked to an unfortunate love story.

At Punta della Mola there is a Bronze Age necropolis, with traces of the adjoining village. Along the coast there are six latomie, that is, quarries from the Greek age, further evidence that in this area there was the ancient sub-urban district of Plemmyrion, which has now disappeared. In the area of the Grotta della Pellegrina there are also some interesting cisterns for rainwater, probably dating back to the nineteenth century.

CONCLUSION

If you are looking for a beach, a place to snorkel, or a place to explore with a boat – this place will has it all along with some history. Explore the bunkers and swim through to the grottos as you take a break from the Sicilian summer heat.
